A man lived in a large neighborhood with his wife and kids, and it would soon be approaching Halloween. The neighborhood attracted a lot of children each year for trick-or-treating, but little did the kids know, the man had to spoil their fun.
A Trick-or-Treat Hotspot
The man’s neighborhood was large, comprising around 90 houses. It was a rich neighborhood, and this made it a magnet for children seeking trick-or-treat antics, usually attracting between 700 and 1000 children.
A Halloween Dilemma
The man expressed his mixed views on Halloween in the neighborhood: “I’ve always loved getting trick-or-treaters, but in the last four years, it’s gotten ridiculous. There are thousands of kids and their parents flooding the streets, littering candy wrappers everywhere, and the amount of small children walking around by themselves is APPALLING.”
A Frightening Incident
The breaking point came two years ago when the man’s daughter tripped and injured her arm whilst trick-or-treating. “There were so many people in our neighborhood, we couldn’t get out”, he explained. “There were cars everywhere. We had to wait for hours until everyone left so that we could go to go to the hospital. My daughter had to wait in pain for HOURS.”
Taking Drastic Action
Determined not to have a repeat incident, the man took action the following year. “I contacted the neighborhood community and we managed to get cops to stand at the gate with a list and only let in family and friends of folks that live here”, he recounted.
The result of this effort was a more manageable Halloween experience. “It was great, there were only about 300 kids in the neighborhood, and after there was barely any trash”, the man beamed. “We’re doing it again this year.”
A Sibling’s Disapproval
Recently, the man brought up his plans with his sister regarding his Halloween management methods. To his surprise, she expressed anger and disapproval. “She told me I was a horrible person for ruining thousands of kids’ Halloween”, he explained.
Their Childhood Experiences
The man’s sister drew on their own trick-or-treat experiences as children, reminding him of how fun it was, and how thousands of kids would join them in the streets. She said it wasn’t fair for him to enjoy this experience, yet deprive other children of having it when he became an adult.
However, the man quickly answered back to his sister. “Here and now, it’s a hazard”, he explained. “If there was a fire or an emergency, no one would be able to get help. When we were kids, there were never any cars lining the streets, the residents could get out if they wanted, and it was never dangerous.”
Despite his reasonable explanation, the man’s sister stormed off in anger. He had always respected his sister’s opinions, so wondered whether he should listen to her. However, he thought back to when his daughter suffered in pain and knew that he couldn’t let that happen to anyone else.
An Online Jury
The man logged on to his favorite internet forum, using the platform as an online jury. He asked readers what they thought about him essentially ruining Halloween for a thousand kids. To his relief, they reached a universal verdict of his innocence. “It sucks for those kids, but when it becomes a hazard, something has to be done”, one reader agreed.
“Yeh, it sounds like your neighborhood is not set up for this”, another reader agreed. “If the number of people and vehicles obstruct essential services, then that’s beyond ridiculous.”
One UK reader found the whole concept baffling. “I’m from the UK and honestly the lengths Americans go to at Halloween just seems ridiculous. We get maybe 15 young kids trick-or-treating with their parents and that’s it, I couldn’t imagine 1000! I find it weird that we still teach kids to knock on strangers’ doors and ask for treats.”
Blame the Parking
However, some people didn’t think the man’s approach was entirely fair. “The bad parking is really the fault of the kids’ parents or whoever was driving”, someone pointed out. “It just seems a bit of an overkill to punish these children for incompetent adults.”
A Change in Perspective
The man was surprised to see a lot of people agree with this sentiment. “Why couldn’t the police just enforce no parking signs?”, someone else suggested. “Kids could still come that way, and parents could find other parking somewhere else.”
