18 Extravagant Hobbies That Are Worth Every Penny

Some people enjoy hobbies that cost a lot of money and they aren’t sorry about it. These hobbies could be things like flying planes, collecting special wines, or sailing around the world. They’re exciting but expensive. A recent online survey asked people, “What expensive hobbies do you have?” Here are the top 18 answers:

Crafting

“We have a saying, “Why should I buy something for $100 when I can spend 6 weeks of my life making it for $500?””

“Crafting can get super expensive really quick. You’re good if you can get all your craft supplies for free or 2nd hand for dirt cheap. But if you have to buy them new, which many must, it can get expensive quickly.”

Flying Airplanes

“Plane rental plus instructor fees equals about $250 an hour. It does get a little cheaper once you get your license, but it’s certainly not a cheap hobby.”

“First solo flight worth every penny, and the biggest adrenaline rush and natural high a person will experience.”

Fixing a Jeep

“It’s not even the Jeep that’s expensive anymore. It’s the trips to take it out wheeling now. But I didn’t buy my Jeep for the mpg but for the smiles per gallon.”

Skiing

“If you ignore the cost of equipment, the cost of seasons passes, and travel, it’s not too bad.”

“Skiing in the US is especially expensive in my experience. And that’s coming from someone who lives in Switzerland.”

Woodworking

“Bring sawdust with you when you buy a new tool. Then you can tell your partner you got it used!”

“It’s glorious. I’ll spend hours in my garage in seemingly a blink of an eye. Expensive, but glorious.”

Cycling (Road and Mountain)

“I was racing motorcycles for several years. Recently switched to racing bicycles instead. 80% of the fun for 20% of the cost. Not to imply that the 20% isn’t still a lot of money.”

“A few weeks ago, I was in the bike shop, and a guy was picking up two bikes for himself and his wife. The total was $24k for the two. While that’s a tad extreme, it’s a pretty expensive sport. I assume most think it’s relatively cheap.”

Warhammer 40k

“Don’t want you kids to do drugs? Teach them to play Warhammer. They will not have money left for drugs.”

“My friend has an amazing Warhammer set on a table tennis board in his basement. He’s been working on it since we were young children, and he’s in his late 20s. I’ve seen his figures and how much work he put into it. It’s super cool. I wanted to get into it, but they are so expensive.”

LEGO

“Sometimes I feel like being addicted to actual drugs would be cheaper.”

“The cost of the Lego is like the cheapest component of owning Legos. People who are new to Legos complain about the price of Legos. People who’ve been at it for a few years complain about the price of all the drawers, shelves, and storage options. People who’ve been at it for longer complain about the bigger house they had to buy to set up their own Lego city.”

House Plants

“I was at a garden shop with my parents this weekend and spotted a rare houseplant I’d never seen in stores, and then saw that it was “only” $35 and so of course I had to buy it. The plant was only a single leaf. My parents thought I was crazy.”

“Rare plants are costly, but the equipment needed to care for them is so pricey. And somehow never enough.”

Pinball Machines

“I’ve just got ten machines because that’s all I can fit in my house. I have owned fifty of them. I was buying them dead, repairing them, and reselling them. Now I play them as even the dead ones are expensive with the resurgence of interest.”

Fishkeeping

“The fish are by far the cheapest part. Setting everything up with equipment was expensive. 150-gallon saltwater tank. $600 tank. $600 plumbing (PVC pipes and fittings). $1500 lights. $1500 pumps and circulation. $700 filtration (skimmer, sump, filter socks, etc.). $2400 controller. $300 mixing station (storing filtered fresh water and pre-mixed saltwater), materials to build the stand for the tank, $300. Floor reinforcement in my crawl space $150 materials (did the work myself).”

“It’s addictive too. I have 2 tanks and am trying hard to resist the urge to add a 3rd.”

Guitars

“Teach a man to fish, and he eats for a day; teach a man to play guitar, and he never eats again.”

“I’ve spent a downright shameful amount of money on gear. You couldn’t waterboard me enough to admit the amount. At least I’ll have some cool stuff to hand to my grandkids someday.”

Making Cheese

“Why buy a reasonably-sized hunk of fancy cheese at the store when you can spend $100s on milk, a couple grand on supplies and equipment, and months of your time on a slightly larger, but not as good tiny wheel of your own?”

“That’s why I specialize in a couple of types that the family love to eat: feta, romano, and parmesan-style cheeses.”

Vinyl Records

“My wife learned to recognize that square-shaped box on the porch and has cut me off.”

“I had to stop. It was causing major issues in my marriage. Unfollowed all the record-buying forums. Started a savings account. I still look, but don’t buy. It helps that the prices are stupid now.”

Horses

“As the old saying goes: “Want to know how to make a small fortune in horses? Start with a large fortune.””

“They take all your money. Literally, all the money you have. And give all the joy you need. So there’s that.”

Going to Concerts

“Live music is the best way to spend money; I love concerts and shows.”

“Seeing all my favorite bands as they came through town adds up quickly, but it is well worth it. And the. Traveling for festivals gets pricey. Austin is within driving distance, but my wife and I going for ACL this October will easily cost $1000+ for a weekend. Looking forward to it, though!”

Astrophotography

“It is indeed astronomically expensive.”

“I assembled a bunch of cheap equipment and got cheap results. I’ve upgraded the scope and mount; now I’m looking at mono-cooled cameras. I just finished building a ROR, so I don’t have to move it all back and forth. Want to be a millionaire astrophotographer? Start out as a billionaire.”

Building Custom Mechanical Keyboards

“I made one. It cost me $600. My friend said his most expensive was around $1200, so I decided to get out. Fantastic keyboard, though.”

“Just got into building keyboards. I built one already, gathering the parts for the 2nd and already eyeing the 3rd. It’s an addicting hobby for no reason other than that creamy clickity clackity.”
