18 Movie Adaptations That Disappointed Die Hard Fans

A large number of the movies we have today are adaptations of our favorite books. While some adaptations capture the magic of the written word, others are made into cinematic nightmares. Here are 18 terrible movie adaptations of books.

The Time Traveler’s Wife (2009)

The main problem with this movie adaptation is the excessive deviation from the source material. The novel was dark and about a beautiful love story that existed outside of normal space and time, but the film adaptation failed to show any of this. Instead, we got a boring romance film.

A Wrinkle in Time (2018)

This is probably the worst book-to-film adaptation of all time. The novel explores complex themes of science, spirituality, and the battle between good and evil, but the film doesn’t really touch them. The story felt rushed and overcompensated with CGI. It lost over $100 million at the box office.

Eragon (2006)

I haven’t heard anyone say anything good about this movie. It deviated so much from the source material. The terrible special effects and acting in the film didn’t help matters either. Eragon performed so poorly at the box office that the entire film franchise was canceled.

Percy Jackson & the Olympians (2010)

This was a completely unfaithful adaptation of the book. The writing was really poor, important scenes from the book were removed, and they aged up the characters, all of which didn’t sit right with fans. Having read all the books as a child, this one was really disappointing. Even Riordan never bothered to watch it.

The Golden Compass (2007)

The Golden Compass was a complete failure. It’s one of the worst movies of the 2000s. The film excluded the deep themes the book explores. Despite its stellar cast and Oscar-winning special effects, The Golden Compass alienated fans of the book. The HBO show is a way better adaptation.

Persuasion (2022)

In the book, Anne Elliot is a plain, shy young woman who is insecure in her own judgment, but it’s the exact opposite in the film. The movie was really boring and had a lot of cringe moments. Guess it tried to ride the Bridgerton wave but failed miserably.

Vampire Academy (2014)

Vampire Academy is a 2014 fantasy horror comedy based on the book series of the same name by Richelle Mead. The book explores complex issues, but the film was just a disaster. It leaves out important parts from the book and has a lot more cringe moments than funny ones.

The Scarlet Letter (1995)

The movie has one of the lowest scores on Rotten Tomatoes. The film missed the entire plot of the novel and took all the complex themes of religion, freedom, and guilt and turned it into an erotic drama. The movie poster alone was enough to put off fans of the book.

The Giver (2014)

The 2014 film adaptation only scratched the surface of the themes present in the book. The whole plot was rushed, and the love story with Jonas and Fiona was unnecessary. Taylor Swift’s cameo made me even more confused. The movie was extremely disappointing.

Allegiant (2016)

The first two movies were quite decent, but the adaptation of the final book was catastrophic. It managed to get an even lower rating on Rotten Tomatoes than Persuasion. It flopped so badly at the box office that the last movie got canceled.

The Lovely Bones (2009)

The plot follows a teenage girl who was murdered by her serial killer neighbor and gets trapped in ‘the in-between,’ where she looks over her family. The film failed to stick to the source material and missed all the important parts. The depiction of the afterlife was just ridiculous.

My Sister’s Keeper (2009)

The whole point of the book is lost because the filmmakers decided to switch who dies. It’s meant to show how fragile life is, but it’s just turned into another tearjerker. They ruined a heart-wrenching story and made it unexceptional.

Inferno (2016)

Inferno is an adaptation of a Dan Brown novel of the same name. The complex themes in the film were diluted, making them less intellectually stimulating. The film also altered the dynamics and relationships between characters, and the plot twists are more predictable, taking out the mystery and intrigue fans enjoy.

Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children (2016)

They switched all the kids’ ages and powers around and introduced unnecessary romantic subplots. Emma was made to rely on Jacob for safety, which doesn’t at all follow the plot in the book. I was really disappointed with this one.

Artemis Fowl (2020)

This movie is just the worst. It deviates from almost everything in the book, and not in a good way. The clever humor and sharp wit present in the books are absent. Furthermore, Artemis Fowl’s character was changed and made to seem more generic. The significant plot points and themes in the book were non-existent.

The Girl on the Train (2016)

Rachel was a cliché thriller protagonist. Emily Blunt helped give life to this bland character, but that wasn’t enough to draw attention from the shallow plot and one-dimensional supporting characters. Too many details in the adaptation weren’t explained, leaving viewers with a lot of questions.

Paper Towns (2015)

This film is John Green’s follow-up to the popular The Fault in Our Stars (2014), so I went in with high expectations, only to be disappointed. The tones and characterizations are so different from the book. The film also failed to capture the complexity of the characters, making it impossible to connect with them.

Billy Bathgate (1991)

Billy Bathgate is a gangster film that stars Dustin Hoffman and Nicole Kidman. The film had the potential of becoming as good as Goodfellas (1990) but was wasted. It’s a shallow adaptation and excludes the one thing that made the 1989 novel such a success—the main character’s narration.
