She Asked Her Spanish Teacher To Call Her Alexandra, Yet The Teacher Continued Using The Spanish Pronunciation – Was Her Mother’s Reaction Too Much?

A woman had a 14-year-old daughter named Alexandra, who was particularly fond of her name. Due to this reason, she always asked people to call her by her full name, and whilst her family and friends respected this, the same could not be said for some of her teachers at school.

Alexandra, Not Alex

Since the age of 10, Alexandra had expressed her dislike for any shortened or alternative versions of her name, preferring to be called “Alexandra” instead of “Lexi” or “Alex.” She had always been assertive in correcting others when her name was mispronounced.

Spanish Class and Name Preferences

In middle school, Alexandra took a Spanish class that presented a potential name pronunciation challenge. “The teacher wanted to call all students by the Spanish version of their name”, the mother explained. “So, she tried to call Alexandra, Alejandra.”

Understanding Her Refusal

Alexandra was not happy about this and expressed her preferences to her Spanish teacher. Thankfully, her teacher was completely understanding and honored her preference to be called “Alexandra” instead of the Spanish equivalent.

High School Challenge

Entering high school, Alexandra faced an almost identical situation with her new Spanish teacher. “Once again, the new teacher announced if a student had a Spanish version of their name, she’d call them that”, the woman recounted. “So, she called Alexandra, Alejandra.”

Just like last time, Alexandra expressed her desire to have her name pronounced how it should be in English. However, the teacher refused, which led the young girl to come home upset and cry to her mother.

A Concerned Parent’s Intervention

Alexandra’s mother, usually hesitant to intervene, decided to email the teacher about her daughter’s discomfort. She questioned the teacher’s reasoning for not respecting Alexandra’s preference, given that the middle school Spanish teacher, who was Hispanic, had done so.

Teacher’s Argument

The high school Spanish teacher defended her stance by suggesting that if students ever visited a Spanish-speaking country, they would be called by their Spanish names. This reasoning seemed weak to Alexandra’s mother, given the previous teacher’s respectful approach.

A Stand for Identity

Alexandra’s mother continued to advocate for her daughter, emphasizing that if it wasn’t a significant issue for the teacher to call her “Alejandra,” then why couldn’t she simply address her as “Alexandra”? After some resistance, the teacher eventually conceded and agreed to use Alexandra’s preferred name.

Resolution Achieved

Thankfully, the mother and daughter experienced a happy ending to this conundrum. Alexandra came home from school one day and confirmed happily that her teacher was now calling her by her proper name.

An Overreaction?

The woman felt like she should be satisfied with the conclusion, yet she felt somewhat conflicted. She wondered whether she and her daughter had overreacted to the mispronunciations, especially considering they were exclusive to Spanish class.

Telling Alexandra’s Story

The woman decided to tell Alexandra’s story online, curious as to what other people felt about it. Her internal conflict was quickly resolved after she saw the army of commenters defending her and her daughter. One person explained, “John can be John in any country, no one would call him Hans, Juan, or Giovanni against his will, just because there is a local version of his name.”

Stupid and Racist

Many people claimed that the teacher’s initial refusal had some darkness behind it. “I know at least a dozen people who came from different countries to mine and have names that exist in my country as well”, another reader chimed in. “I call them the name they give me because calling them anything else is stupid and in my opinion also very racist”.

Alejandra Needs to Chill

However, not everyone defended the mother and her daughter. “Every Spanish teacher I ever had did this”, explained one reader. “I don’t get the outrage here. Not one kid ever argued about it, usually people just laughed. This is a weird hill to die on. There’s something to be said for not taking yourself too seriously.”
