A woman who is stay-at-home mom offered to lend a hand to her new neighbor who is a single mother named May with two young boys. The woman buys the boys a Christmas present, but a misunderstanding leads to a heated argument with May, causing the woman to feel guilty and unsure of how to make things right.
A New Neighbor

In June of this year, the woman, a 24-year-old stay-at-home mom, and her husband, 27, had a new neighbor move in next door, a single mother named May with two young boys aged 4 and 7. May’s situation was not ideal, and the woman and her husband offered to lend a hand whenever she needed, doing the occasional babysitting, school drop-offs/pick-ups, and grocery shopping.
She Was Broke

As Christmas approached, the woman asked May if they could buy the boys a present. Last year, May didn’t have enough money, so they didn’t celebrate Christmas, and she didn’t even tell the 4-year-old it was Christmas day.
Excited for Christmas

May said yes and was excited to celebrate Christmas, and the woman even lent her some Christmas decorations. The woman got the two boys some Harry Potter Legos, gift-wrapped it, and had her husband deliver it.
The Kids Thanked Them

Last weekend, the boys came over really excited and thanked the woman for the Christmas present. She asked them how they liked it and told them why she picked it out (her nephew, has them and liked it), but the 4-year-old got confused and said their mother got them the Lego and said the woman gave them clothes.
Baby Brain

The woman was a little slow (she blamed baby brain and sleep deprivation), but her husband took over and ‘saved it,’ claiming they knew the boys would be more excited over toys than clothes. They didn’t seem to question it before leaving, and the woman forgot all about it.
White Savior Complex

The next day, May came over furious and began yelling about how the woman ruined her children’s Christmas and had a white savior complex. May accused the woman of wanting all the credit and attention, and since they were black/mixed, she claimed the woman gave them such a ‘good and expensive’ gift on purpose.
She Shouldn’t Have Taken Credit

May said the woman should’ve never assumed that May would tell the boys which present the woman had bought them, and she claimed the woman took credit on purpose. She said the woman should’ve given her all the credit, and the woman tried to explain she didn’t know what May had told them, and she explained that once she and her husband realized they backtracked. However, apparently, now both of her kids knew that the Lego was actually from the woman, not their mother.
A Bad Apple

May claimed the woman should’ve known that May had told them she had bought the Lego, May claimed the woman wanted to take credit without asking. May said that the woman doing so without asking May ‘said something about her character.’ May was furious when she left, and they haven’t spoken since, but it’s been weighing on the woman ever since.
She Felt Terrible

The woman felt terrible about the situation and couldn’t shake off the guilt. She had genuinely wanted to do something nice for the boys and May, but it had all gone wrong. She didn’t know how to make it right, and she didn’t want their relationship to be strained.
The Neighbor Was Overreacting

She confided in her husband, who tried to reassure her that it wasn’t her fault and that May was overreacting.

More Internet Comments

Another person commented, “Not only that, but the kids came over and thanked OP for HER GIFT. She’d have to be entirely psychic to have guessed that they were talking about something other than the gift she gave them. It’d be one thing if mom (or Santa) took credit for all the gifts those kids got, but she used OP’s generosity to set OP up in an absolutely impossible situation.”
A Final Comment

This last commenter wrote, “OP didn’t have a “white savior complex” when she offered to buy her kids gifts, she suddenly got it because she didn’t think about lying to these kids? Even if OP exposed her on purpose, while it wouldn’t have been ideal, it would still be the mom’s fault for lying without telling OP first. If someone is generous enough to give you money I doubt they’d say no to maybe letting them claim that those gifts were from “Santa”.”
