A woman had recently secured herself a new job, working as a waitress. However, she had worked as a waitress within the hospitality sector across numerous past jobs. she faced problems when wanting to keep her professional and personal life separate when one of her co-workers refused to stop messaging her on her personal phone. Here is what she had to say:
Shift Swapping Stance
Swift swapping was prevalent in the industry, and in her past job, this had been organized through a mobile app. Whilst she preferred to use the app to keep work and personal life separate, she did offer her personal number out to colleagues, an action that she soon regretted.
Out Of Work Drama
The woman explained her stance on communicating through a personal phone number. “My old colleagues would start using my number for personal conversations, and it sometimes got messy and caused drama.”
Keeping It Professional
At the woman’s new job, there was once again a mobile app dedicated to shift swapping. She decided that this time, she would keep her personal number to herself, and solely conduct workplace conversations on the app.
A Persistent Request
Despite her clear boundaries, the woman, who had only been at the job for a short time, encountered a coworker who texted her at 5 a.m. on a Friday, requesting that she take her shift for Saturday. The woman politely reminded the coworker to use the app for such matters and also questioned how she got her number in the first place.
A Persistent Coworker
Despite her stern response, the coworker persisted, claiming that texting was faster and insisting that it was an emergency. However, the woman maintained her stance, reiterating that she would not discuss work matters through her personal number. She then blocked the coworker’s number.
Declining The Shift
Communications aside, the woman had decided to decline the offer. She was already scheduled to work on Saturday night, and she had no intention of taking on additional shifts.
The Unexpected Consequence
To her surprise, a manager approached the woman at work the next day and asked why she hadn’t shown up for the Saturday morning shift. Confused, the woman shared the messages she had exchanged with the coworker, demonstrating her refusal to take on the shift. The manager accepted the explanation and left to address the matter.
Confrontation With The Coworker
The next Monday, the coworker angrily confronted the woman, asserting that she had agreed to take the shift. The woman reiterated that she had never agreed to it. The coworker then questioned why the woman hadn’t responded when she thanked her for taking the shift, to which the woman explained that she had blocked the coworker and hadn’t seen the message.
Despite the woman’s clear explanation, the coworker was not accepting it. “She starts going off about how I’m so rude and inconsiderate, and she just needed me to take one shift”, the woman explained. “I told her it’s not my problem she didn’t get her shift covered.”
Reflecting On The Situation
The woman was adamant that she had done nothing wrong, and had only tried to keep communications professional within the workplace. Despite this, she wondered whether blocking the coworker was a step too far, considering the emotional reaction she had to it.
Frustrated with her experience, the woman recounted her story online, seeking the perspective of others. “You are allowed to set boundaries to separate your work and personal life”, reminded one person in her defense.
Not Getting Through
Everyone who read the woman’s post sympathized with her heavily. “You told your coworker 4 times to communicate through the work app”, one reader stated. “There’s only so much you can do to get someone to understand when they just don’t want to understand.”
Coworker’s Evil Intentions
Other commenters wrote of how they believed the coworker knew exactly what they were doing. “Your coworker lied to management and just assumed you would be bullied into doing her work for her after you repeatedly said no”, concluded one reader. “Hugely unprofessional, fireable in my opinion…someone like that doesn’t sound like a team player but a bully”.
