A 17-year-old girl visited the ice cream shop her parents owned with her friends, her brother was working there and asked her to help out as they were very busy, but she refused, sparking family drama. Here’s what she had to say:
Her Parents Bought An Ice Cream Shop
The girl said, “So my parents recently came into a fair bit of money (inheritance from one of my mom’s elderly relatives I think) and decided to buy out a local ice cream shop that was going out of business. They love that place because it’s where they met and has tons of sentimental meaning to them.”
They Hired Her Brother
The girl’s parents hired her 18-year-old brother to work there because they wanted him to gain work experience before heading off to college. They didn’t offer the girl a job, and she didn’t ask for one, since she already had a fast food job.
She Visited The Shop With Friends
One day, the girl and her friends planned to meet up at the ice cream shop. They arrived and found it quite busy, so they joined the line. Suddenly, her brother, who was working there, came out and called the girl over. The girl wondered what he could want.
It Was Very Busy
She was surprised when her brother gave her an apron and asked for her help in the back because the machines needed to be cleaned urgently. He explained to her that the shop was swamped and his coworkers were panicking.
She Refused To Help
Her brother even offered to let her friends skip the line if she helped out for just ten minutes. However, the girl declined, she explained, “I refused on the grounds that I wasn’t being paid.” Her brother was frustrated and told her she “had to help out because it’s the “family business” and said she “owed it to him to help out” because the girl had “brought such a big group in.”
Her Brother Coulnd’t Change Her Mind
The girl stood by her decision, however. She explained, “I decided that that would cause a scene in a packed shop, and refused again. He huffed and waved me off, then went to open the second register.”
She Enjoyed Her Time With Friends
She returned to her friends in the queue and enjoyed chatting with them. However, her brother continued to give her dirty looks until they received their ice cream cones and left. The girl didn’t think too much of it and spent the rest of the day with her friends. But she was surprised by what happened when she got back home.
Her Parents Were Angry
When she got back home, her parents confronted her and told her her actions were petty. They then told her to work a shift at the ice cream shop the following day to make up for it. But she reminded them that she already had a scheduled shift at her actual job for the entire of that day.
Was She In The Wrong?
Eventually, her parents let it go, but she felt they all thought that she was petty and lazy. She didn’t think she needed to help out as she wasn’t getting paid, and she had her own job to do the next day. Nevertheless, her parent’s response left her questioning her actions.
