His wife, aged 27, possessed a genuine talent for crafting high-quality jewelry. Her online business was a roaring success and boasted many sales and positive reviews.
Relentless Promotion
However, the issue at hand wasn’t the quality of her work but her persistent promotion of it. “EVERYWHERE we go, EVERY conversation she has, she slips in something about her shop and tries to promote it”, the man explained.
Difficult to Converse
The man expressed that the woman’s relentless marketing was making it difficult to make normal conversation with people, not only for her but for him also: “Talking to our waiter? She’ll mention that she has a pair of earrings for sale that would compliment their eyes. Talking to someone online? She’ll somehow manage to say ‘as the owner of a small business…’”
Family Gathering Incident
The breaking point came during a family gathering when, within minutes, his wife showcased her latest bracelet, offering discounts to family members, and embarking on her familiar sales spiel. She repeated this pattern with at least five individuals over the course of two hours.
Second-Hand Embarrassment
The man felt that his wife’s relentless promotion was somewhat cringe-inducing, and he received second-hand embarrassment from it. He felt that the people she was talking to wished she would give it a rest so that they could continue socializing and enjoy themselves.
Deciding to Confront Her
The man made the decision that at the next opportunity, he would confront his wife. This was far from the first time that he had been bothered by her behavior and felt that it was best for both himself and his wife that she was made aware of the problem.
A Not-so-Gentle Hint
On the way home from the event, the man approached his wife with a gentle rebuke. “I told her that she needs to quit doing that”, the man recounted. “I told her if people were actually interested, they would ask her about her store, but not every single person she talks to wants or needs to hear about her art.”
Her Defensiveness
His wife, however, did not receive this critique well. She grew upset, asserting that her intention was merely to spread awareness of her products, and she failed to comprehend what she was doing wrong.
A Harsh Tone
In retrospect, the man admitted that he had confronted his wife with a slightly harsh tone. He recognized the importance of her spreading the word of her online shop, and that he could have been a lot nicer in addressing the issue, especially considering her tears.
His Defense
However, the man still defended his stance. Whilst he admitted that he could have been kinder, he professed that his wife could be less obnoxious and more subtle with her in-person marketing approaches.
Venting Online
The man became frustrated with being made to feel like the bad guy, so he headed online, interested in hearing the thoughts of internet dwellers. The post mostly received sympathy. “I would go out of my way to avoid her”, stated one reader. “I hate pushy salespeople. She can promote her jewelry of course, but every conversation? That’s a “no” from me.”
An Online Seller’s Perspective
An interesting perspective was provided by a fellow Internet shop owner. “I sell online too, have done for 23 years, and I make seriously good money”, related another reader. “I never bring it up unless someone asks, and even then, I give a few vague responses. She needs to stop. There is a great divide between business and socializing.”
Finding a Balance
However, some people felt bad for the woman. “There’s a middle ground here, but I think you were the jerk because of your harsh delivery”, one critic stated. “She has a right and arguably an obligation to promote herself. I can see, however, that you are probably craving a “no business hats” night. Maybe bring that up (gently) after apologizing.”

“Her in-person approach must have actually worked a few times otherwise she wouldn’t bother doing it so often, I agree she should dial it down but it sounds like it would be bad business for her to stop her in-person sales completely.”
