An individual had recently become a homeowner, purchasing a house that featured a particularly huge shared driveway. The driveway was approximately 75 feet long and twice as wide as a typical driveway, yet this still wasn’t large enough to avoid tensions with their neighbor.
Renovations Next Door
One day, the next-door neighbor began renovations on their property with the intention of renting it out. This meant that for the past three weeks, the homeowner next door and their work crew had been parking a large van at the end of the shared driveway, effectively blocking any passage in or out.
The Individual’s Appeal
Feeling inconvenienced, the individual approached the neighboring homeowner, politely explaining the issue and requesting that they not block the driveway. “I either have to hunt down the owner of the van and have them move, or I have to park 4-5 blocks away,” the individual explained to the neighbor.
The neighbor apologized for the inconvenience they had caused, assuring the individual that the problem would be rectified. For two days, it was, but the issue resurfaced. The individual once again approached the homeowner with their grievance and was told once again that it wouldn’t happen in the future.
A Dumpster Blockage
However, the following week presented an even more challenging scenario. The individual’s driveway was blocked on both sides by huge construction dumpsters, making access to their property virtually impossible.
A Simple Solution
The individual needed to access their driveway urgently for work, so they took action: “I called the number on the side of the dumpster and explained. They came out later that day after the work crew had left and removed the dumpsters. I told them they could just place them all the way up the driveway, but the company made the decision to remove them completely.”
The Homeowner’s Anger
The following day, the neighbor stormed over to the individual’s house, fuming about the removed dumpsters. The dumpsters were owned by the neighbor’s construction firm, meaning they had now lost their deposits. The individual calmly explained that they were left with no choice, as the dumpsters were blocking their access.
An Explosive Confrontation
The homeowner, seemingly oblivious to the inconvenience caused, was furious. “They’re exploding with anger that I had no right to do this, and all I had to do was ask them to move the dumpsters,” the individual recounted.
A Firm Stand
However, the individual stood their ground. They reminded the homeowner of the previous conversations where they had requested that the driveway not be blocked and, with conviction, stated that the neighbor had no right to encroach upon their property.
The confrontation escalated to the point where other neighbors were drawn into the drama. One neighbor suggested that the individual could have just asked them for the neighbor’s phone number, and asked them to move the dumpsters. However, the individual expressed that having already addressed similar issues twice, they didn’t have faith that such action would work.
Seeking a Verdict
The individual felt like they had done what they had to do, but their neighbors’ anger was clear, so they headed online to ask the internet for their thoughts. Thankfully, internet strangers came to the rescue. “It’s your property, end of story”, one person stated concisely. “He knows better, he just doesn’t care about inconveniencing you.”
One reader flipped the individual’s neighbor’s logic on its side: “Remind them that THEY should have contacted YOU to discuss and address any and all construction issues BEFORE construction began”, they screamed. “This is 100% a them problem.”
Everyone found it difficult to sympathize with the neighbor considering the trouble they were causing. “They lost their deposits, boo hoo”, one commenter laughed. “You could’ve lost your job, or who knows what else. Your needs were more important than his. I’m sure he’s learned his lesson now.”
One commenter even suggested to the individual that it was time to seek legal action and prepare for more of the same. “This has totally not been your fault, but in your shoes, I would be lawyering up on this.”
