They Bought Their Dream Home Which Featured A Pool, But A Child Had Drowned In It Last Summer – Were They Right To Continue Using It?

A couple had been searching for a new home, when they stumbled upon a property that seemed like a dream come true. However, they weren’t yet aware that the property was attached to a dark and tragic story.

A Luxurious Amenity

One of the biggest lures of the property was the fact that it had a backyard pool. This was a seriously luxurious amenity that would typically fall beyond their budget, yet the property was mysteriously within their price range.

However, the couple was soon told of a tragic incident on the property that explained the bargain price. It turned out that during the previous summer, a neighbor’s child had tragically drowned in the property’s swimming pool.

Balancing Pros and Cons

Despite the haunting story, the couple decided to go for it. “I know it’s morbid, but my husband and I decided we could look past it”, the woman wrote. “We could never otherwise afford anything like it. It was big enough that all our kids could finally have their own bedrooms.”

A Chilly Welcome

Upon moving in, the pool lay empty, devoid of any water, a stark reminder of the past tragedy. The couple saw no reason to fill it immediately, especially with the chilly weather rendering it unusable.

Welcoming the Summer Heat

As the temperature rose with the approach of summer, the couple decided it was finally time to fill the pool. Their children were ecstatic, their laughter and games filled the air as they enjoyed the pool’s refreshing waters.

Unpleasant Confrontation

However, their happiness was short-lived. “One day, my husband was confronted by our neighbor (the one whose kid died) saying that the sounds of kids playing in the pool were traumatizing to his family”, the woman wrote. “They said that we were horrible for letting our kids play in that pool after what happened.”

A Wave of Criticism

To the couple’s shock, the neighbor’s anger was not isolated. They soon discovered an online post where several other residents in the neighborhood shared similar sentiments. Many believed that the only appropriate course of action would have been to remove or fill the pool to prevent further emotional distress.

Resisting the Pressure

Despite the mounting pressure and criticism, the couple remained steadfast in their decision to keep the pool. The pool had become an integral part of their lives, bringing joy to their family. It was their first experience with such a luxury, and they were not ready to let it go.

Privacy and Safety Measures

The couple ensured that they took the necessary steps to ensure privacy and safety on their property. Their tall, solid fence with a locked gate provided a suitable barrier for the pool, and they made sure that their children were never swimming unattended.

A Moral Dilemma

The couple and their children continued to enjoy the swimming pool, but they couldn’t help but feel somewhat guilty. They recognized that their neighbors’ trauma was justifiable, but it didn’t feel fair for the family to have to give up their swimming pool due to this dark history.

Asking the Internet

The woman posted online on behalf of herself and her husband, asking the internet what they thought about the matter. They were relieved to discover that the majority of readers were firmly on their side. “This isn’t your problem… you can’t change what happened before you moved in”, pointed out one commenter.

They Could Have Filled it

Many commenters agreed that the neighbors should have done something about the pool if it was so traumatic. “If they wanted the pool filled in, they should have bought the property and done it”, someone suggested. “It’s not their property. If it’s a sore spot for them, they should move.”

Not Their Problem

The general sentiment throughout the thread was that this was not the couple’s problem to deal with. “Sorry a kid died in the pool”, started one reader. “But it has nothing to do with you. Kids drown in lakes and rivers all the time, unfortunately, but people still use and enjoy the rivers and lakes. Other people’s grief is not your problem no matter what they think.”
