A person lived with their mother in a quiet suburban neighborhood. Little did they know, that something as small as an avocado was soon going to complicate their lives. Here is what they had to say:
Green Fingers
The person had cultivated an impressive array of fruit trees in their yard: “I have 7 different avocado trees, 3 mango trees, 4 types of peach trees, mulberry, pomegranate, lemon, orange, guava, granadilla, and apricot trees in my yard”, they wrote enthusiastically. “I also grow almost every herb and veggie you can think of.”
Avocados For All
Living with only their mother, they extended a warm invitation to neighbors and friends to partake in the bounty of their backyard. It was an open-hearted gesture, allowing anyone in need to freely pick fruits and vegetables throughout the year.
Neighborly Relations
One particular avocado tree stood near the neighbor’s yard, though it didn’t extend beyond the property line. Over the years, a neighbor, who ran a catering business, had been helping herself to the avocados without any objections from the garden’s owner.
A Surprise Visitor
One day, a visitor arrived with a request for avocados, carrying two sizable baskets. The garden’s owner readily agreed, allowing them access to the avocado tree, with a simple request to close the gate once they were done.
An Unexpected Accusation
The garden’s owner resumed their normal activities, believing there was nothing amiss. However, the following morning brought an unexpected confrontation. The neighbor stormed to their front door, banging on it loudly, demanding answers.
Ruined Business Claims
Confusion filled the air as the neighbor accused the garden’s owner of giving away “her” avocados. The garden’s owner, perplexed, inquired about this accusation.
An Avacado Supplier
“She said she’s an avocado supplier for a restaurant a few kilometers away, and I ruined it by giving the owner’s daughter baskets of Avocados”, the person explained.
Generosity Misunderstood
The situation grew tense as the neighbor claimed that her daughter had simply come to ask for avocados for free, whereas the neighbor herself would be happy to pay for them. The garden’s owner, however, held steadfast to a principle passed down through generations – never selling something freely given to those in need within the community.
Unjust Accusations
Tempers flared as the neighbor unleashed her frustration on the garden’s owner and their mother. She even resorted to labeling them as “witches,” seemingly due to their unique ability to successfully grow a thriving garden in an area where others had struggled.
Mixed Feelings
The person found themselves perplexed by the situation. They felt that they had done nothing wrong, and didn’t deserve to be shouted at for giving out free avocados. However, they also recognized that this move had negatively impacted the lives of their neighbors, even if this was only because they were selling their avocados.
Telling Their Story
The person decided to write up their story and post it on the internet, hoping that someone could advise them. Everybody thought the person was very kind, and thought the neighbor’s behavior was bizarre. One reader wrote: “So this woman was selling your fruit, and is now mad that the people she was selling it to figured out her genius plan? LOL… tell your neighbor to shove it.”
Avocado Entitlement
Everyone agreed that it was wrong that the neighbor was taking such advantage of the avocados. “This neighbor feels awfully entitled to money from avocados that don’t grow on her property”, one person pointed out. “I wouldn’t be letting her have any anymore if she’s going to act like a spoiled brat about it.”
Fight For Their Right
Despite the bizarre scenario, one person offered some serious advice: “She made a business profiting off your generosity, and you had no way of knowing the person collecting was her customer. If your neighbor wants to have exclusive rights, she needs to set up a contract with you guys. Otherwise, it’s your right to give away to anyone, even her customers”.
