They Won Two Tickets to A Concert and Invited Their Friend, but She Wouldn’t Chip in For Any Travel Expenses – Were They Bitter to Consider Going Alone?

A person entered a competition to win tickets to a concert, not thinking much of it. However, they would soon find out that not only had they won the tickets, but also a dispute with their friend.

Winning the Tickets

A few weeks after entering the competition, the person was surprised to receive news that they had won two tickets worth $50 each. The event was due to be held in a city about a 45-minute drive away.

Excited about the opportunity, the person began to think about what he could do with the extra ticket. “I asked a friend if she wanted to go with me, and she said yes, even though she’d never heard of the people performing”, the person explained.

The Driving Dilemma

The person, who had already done a fair amount of driving that day, asked their friend if she wouldn’t mind driving this time. After all, they were giving her a free ticket to the event.

Their friend, however, declined the driving role, explaining that she had already driven to the city earlier in the week and didn’t want to drive again. Reluctantly, the person accepted this excuse and agreed to drive them both.

Further Requests

The person had a new proposition for their friend. “I asked if she would mind covering gas and parking (free if we park on the street, $5-10 if we have to park in a garage)”, they explained.

Another Refusal

To the person’s surprise, their friend also refused this request. “She said she didn’t want to go if she had to pay for gas and parking.”

Considering Options

The person began to ponder their choices. They considered going to the show alone, driven by the friend’s reluctance to contribute anything to the trip.

Confusion and Politeness

However, the person was still struggling with their friend’s response. “I’m confused about why she would have agreed to come, knowing that the show was a bit of a drive and expecting me to cover the costs entirely”, they explained. “I know she wasn’t really invested since she didn’t know about the show before, but surely it’s polite to offer a ride or to at least pitch in a few bucks?”

A Desire for Solitude

In the end, the person found themselves leaning towards going to the show solo, taking care of the costs themselves, but still giving the extra ticket to their friend. This would mean leaving her to make her own way to the concert in an act of spite.

A Moral Question

However, the questionable morality of this decision was apparent to the person. They would still be driving to the concert, spending the same amount of money, and giving the friend the ticket, but would be refusing to help with her transport. On the other hand, the person felt like this was a valid reaction considering her seeming lack of gratitude.

The Internet’s Verdict

The person headed online to write up their bitter plan on a forum, hoping to receive validation from others. However, many people felt the person was acting unreasonably. “You offered a free ticket to someone”, a commenter reminded them. “You plan on going either way, no? What’s the harm in bringing your friend along then!?”

Both Friends Were Selfish

Some readers felt that both the person and their friend were in the wrong. “You offered to give her the ticket and now you have changed your mind… that is impolite, you should commit to something when an offer is made”, someone claimed. “However, your friend seems ungrateful for not coming up with at least some money for the trip, especially since you offered to drive.”

It Would Cost the Same

Whilst some people took the person’s side, the majority felt they were being bitter and nasty. “Going by yourself is going to cost you the same amount, so now all you’ve accomplished is being nasty”, one reader accused. “Congrats. I predict a long and miserable future for you unless you change your entitled attitude.”
