After being left with an inheritance from their mother, a man decided to buy out the house from his siblings instead of keeping the cash. Years later, he sold the house, and now his siblings want the profit.
The man explained, “When my mom died, back in 2018, she left me and my siblings a decent chunk of money and her house”. He explained that the house was a great property and that he wanted to keep it, but his siblings wanted to sell the house and split the money.
He Could Have the House
He wanted to make an investment into the house rather than take the larger sum of money. He elaborated, “I asked my siblings if I could buy them out. They were pretty excited about the idea. The house would stay in the family and they still get their cash.”
He Moved in
The siblings went through the process and he bought the house from his siblings using a portion of his inheritance as well as his own savings. He quickly moved in with his then fiancée, and explained, “We saved a bunch on rent, the house was paid off, the location was great, we were really happy with the house.”
His Siblings Wasted Their Inheritance
The brother spent all of his money in two years. He explains, “He fancied himself an ‘influencer.’ He bought a Maserati for cash, went to expensive nightclubs, vacationed in exotic places”. The sister and her husband also used up her portion of the money and bought an expensive boat.
The man stated that when they had family gatherings, the jealous siblings would make snide comments about the house and how much it was now worth. The man explained, “We have had an influx of people move to my city. It’s growing rapidly and the price of the house essentially tripled”.
They Decided to Move Out
The man and his wife wanted to relocate to be closer to her family, so they decided to put the house on the market. The property sold very quickly and it became clear that his siblings were unhappy with the situation.
A Share of the Profit
He said, “Both of my siblings think that I owe it to them to split the profit I made, because it’s only fair”. He stated the siblings would not stop bothering him, calling him selfish and explained that they felt cheated out of their inheritance.
The Family Took His Siblings’ Side
The siblings suggested that they did their brother a favor by allowing the buying out process to go smoothly. He divulged, “This has become really toxic and most of my family is on their side. My mom’s sister says it would have broken her heart to see her kids fight like this.”
He Turned to the Internet for Support
Most users sided with him. One person said, “The fact that they didn’t understand that you can either invest or spend an inheritance is not your problem. They chose to spend their inheritance while you chose to invest yours.”
Another Person Commented
“You bought them out fair and square. The profit is yours to do with as you please. Greedy, greedy, greedy siblings.”
Someone Else Gave Their Opinion
“The people in your family on their side are idiots. Why is it okay for them to get paid twice but you need to give them cash for the buyout AND to split the profits? Answer: it’s not.”
