The woman went for a run and noticed a man behaving suspiciously around the parking lot. She later posted about the encounter on social media, but her friend told her she was wrong to include the man’s race in the description.
She Went for A Run
The 29 year old woman went to the park for a run one evening. She started running in the direction of a highway and planned to turn around at half a mile to avoid the forest, but she ended up turning sooner as it was getting very dark.
She Noticed a Suspicious Man
As she was heading back towards the direction of her car, she saw a man pacing around the parking lot. She added, “I didn’t want to assume anything but I just took a mental note and continued my jog. After I passed him, I noticed he began walking the trail in the same direction I was jogging.”
She Stared Him Down
She continued running and was 0.8 miles into her run and about 500 feet from her car when she decided to turn around and head back to the car to finish. She stated, “ When I turned around, I walked into the street, stared him down so he would know I saw him, and acted like I was on the phone. He continued his journey in the opposite direction, and I thought I was in the clear.”
The Woman Ran Next to Someone for Safety
She passed her car again and was 0.9 miles in and turned around to sprint the last 0.1 miles. The woman then saw an older man running in the same direction and decided to run near him.
The Man Had Returned
She explained, “As me and the older gentleman are running back towards my car, the man that previously creeped me out is back where I saw him initially, in the street by the cars and begins to sprint in the same direction we’re running.“
She Rushed Into Her Car
She quickly got into her car and locked it as the man passed by and drove out of the parking lot. She added, “I question whether I’m being paranoid, I do listen to a lot of true crime podcasts. I don’t know if he was doing drills and it just happened to be an odd coincidence or it was something more sinister.”
The Woman Posted About the Encounter
She explained, “I posted about it on our neighborhood site to warn others of my encounter, seeing as there are various middle and high schools around. I started by apologizing if it was a misunderstanding but went on to tell the story – what I previously stated above, including a description of person.“
She Included the Man’s Race
She discussed what had happened with her friend, who said that she shouldn’t have included the race of the man in her post. The woman added, “She said I’m making minorities look bad, it wasn’t that big of a deal seeing as he ran past the car, and you know the social climate for Hispanics.”
The Woman Clarified the Situation
She had apologized at the beginning of the post if there had been a misunderstanding, but she had to provide the full description just in case. She added, “I posted him as White or Hispanic (it was a bit dark when I attempted to stare him down). I too, am a minority if that matters.”
Was She in the Wrong?
Was she wrong to make the social media post? Should she have handled the situation differently?
She Turned to The Internet for Advice
One user commented, “You didn’t call the cops. You didn’t take a picture. You were in a scary situation and were warning others. You used race as a descriptor, so other people would be aware. You started off by apologizing.”
Another Person Gave Their Perspective
“If you’re an avid runner, you know what’s normal behavior and what is not, and this sounds pretty creepy. Your friend is a jerk for being more concerned about optics than the safety of her friend and others in the area.”
Someone Else Commented
“The true crime shows are full of stories like this when the person doesn’t get safely back to their car after their run.”
Another User Suggested
“That behavior would have been suspicious regardless of race.”
