The desire for a more manageable and improved life is common among most individuals. Numerous actions can be taken to get there. An internet survey recently asked, “What improved your life so much you wished you had done sooner?”

Stopped Living My Life Just Waiting for The Weekend

“When you work 5 days a week and have 2 days off, it’s not good to always wait for those 2 days. You can plan something meaningful or fun every day, even if it’s just a small thing.”

“This is a good one, but hard for some people. I’m up at 4:30am to prepare for work and get home at 6:00pm. That gives me 3ish hours to eat dinner, shower, and unwind before I need to go to bed. Unfortunately, I spend my entire week looking forward to the weekend.”

Flossing

“My hygiene and cleaning visits are a breeze, and I haven’t had a cavity in years!”

“On a similar note, flossing before brushing. I used to brush, then floss, but flossing then brushing is definitely the way.”

Learning a New Language

“Learning Spanish has changed my life. I have friends all over the world now. I’m going to Europe for the first time this year. The world has opened up for me. Now I’m back in school learning how to teach English to Spanish speakers, and I’m learning French. Plus, it was a huge confidence booster.”

Getting a Divorce

“People should be ready to throw in the towel when they know a relationship is in-salvageable. Marriage certificates, kids, or family pressures are not a factor. Living a miserable life makes everyone around you miserable as well.”

“I stayed in it too long even though I know I made a mistake the first year. Lived with anger, depression, and loneliness for years. I’m lonely but mentally at peace and happy being single.”

Attending Higher Education

“Bachelor degree at 47 years old. Master degree at 50 years old. Doubled my salary in 4 years, from just getting by to on track for retiring at 60.”

“Stopped arguing with random strangers on internet.”

Leaving Everything Behind and Starting Over

“Besides some debt, a suitcase, and contacts for only the non-toxic people in my life, it’s been an extremely liberating experience. And looking back, nothing was preventing me from doing it sooner, no real reason at least. I just kept making excuses not to do it until one day I couldn’t think of one.”

“The biggest issue isn’t finding work, but finding a visa if you plan to leave the country. I was lucky and, at first, bounced around the US before moving out of the States.”

Moving Closer to Work

“My commute went from 45 miserable minutes in traffic glaring in hatred at the tail lights in front of me to a pleasant 15-minute bike ride. I got an hour of free time every day and better health.”

“I just moved, and my new commute is an 8-minute bike ride. I’m so much happier now. Finding the right house at a reasonable price took forever, and getting an accepted offer. Still, my quality of life is significantly better.”

Exercising Every Day

“Anxiety and depression are much easier to manage, and I got some confidence I haven’t had in years.”

“It even helped me make new friends!”

Admiring the Sky

“Cloud/sky watching is something I love doing too! I’m always in awe when I see the skies painted in such extraordinary hues.”

Flower Gardening

“Really relaxing, you will see results all summer, lots of successes and failures, but failures bring improvements. And I listen to audible books while I’m at it sometimes. Especially great if you have a desk job.”

“I’ve been growing produce on my apartment balcony for the past few years, and it’s been a fun learning experience! Plus, eating food picked a whole 15 feet away from your kitchen is cool, too.”

Quitting Drinking

“It is the best thing I’ve ever done for my mental and physical health, and it’s done nothing but improve my relationships. The last year and a half have been the best I’ve ever had.”

“I feel the same way. I quit when I was 29, and my whole life improved. I remember all my nights and celebrations. I no longer had to make a list of people to apologize to every morning after a get-together or party. 10 out of 10 would recommend it.”

Doing at Least One Chore a Day

“You would be amazed at how well getting something done, even if you hate it, can fight back against certain depressive mentalities, particularly the ones that convince you you’re useless or are a burden.”

“This is great advice. For me, a ‘triple 30’ worked wonders. Every day spend 30 minutes cleaning/chores, 30 minutes exercising, and 30 minutes on self-improvement, which could be anything (e.g., practicing guitar). Get home from work, knock off the triple 30 in 1.5 hours, and oh man, the sloth feels so good and earned after that. And what’s 1.5 hours? Nothing. Highly recommend it.”

Learning to Set Boundaries and Say No

“Yes! It feels so wrong at first. People get so angry when you quit being a doormat.”

“It’s so important to be able to do this, and while most people realize the benefits for yourself, it’s so much nicer to have a partner you know will say no, and set boundaries.”

“I loved to run, but it destroyed my legs. I can swim my little heart out.”

“Swimming is great. Lots of fun, refreshing, and good exercise.”

Reading Books

“I started reading science fiction and fantasy books instead of everything I read being “great” or “literary,” and I found I like reading things I enjoy more than things other people deem relevant or worthwhile.”

“I’ve gotten really into audiobooks. I got rid of satellite radio because it’s basically all I listen to in the car anymore. Makes chores go by much easier, too.”

Improving My Social Skills

“You can’t help the mental health stuff you were given, and it may have just taken time to figure out your own strategies! I feel you, though; I was not open to the idea of people for a long time.”

“The hard answer is to get yourself out there. Drugs helped me, but it could be a better strategy. Figure out things you like to do that can involve meeting people and developing friendships. Fitness classes, river clean-ups, career organizations, etc.”
